Which CPR Class Do Healthcare Students Need in Nashville?
Starting a clinical rotation means showing proof of CPR certification, and the wrong class can cost you a delayed start. If you are a student in a healthcare program in Nashville, the class you almost certainly need is American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers. Here is how to be sure and how to get it done.
The short answer: BLS for Healthcare Providers
BLS, sometimes called BCLS, is the standard CPR course for anyone training for a clinical role. It is required by most programs in:
Nursing and nurse practitioner programs
Medical and dental school
Physical therapy and occupational therapy
Radiology and imaging technology
Paramedic and EMT programs
It covers adult, child and infant CPR, AED use, choking relief and team-based resuscitation. If you have never held a BLS card, take the first-time certification class. If yours is expiring, take the renewal.
Why a general CPR class may not be accepted
Heartsaver CPR is an excellent AHA course, but it is designed for the public: teachers, coaches, personal trainers, babysitters and lifeguards. It is not for healthcare providers, and school programs typically will not accept it. Check your program handbook, then confirm the card says “BLS Provider.”
What to expect
The AHA requires every student to have access to the current AHA Provider Manual before, during and after class.
Classes are hands-on, with small groups and time on the manikins.
You can do the online portion at your own pace and finish with an in-person skills check.
Your AHA Provider Card is valid for 2 years.
Renewing more than one card
Many clinicians renew BLS and ACLS together. Much of BLS is reviewed at the start of ACLS, so doing both in one day saves time. If your program later requires ACLS or PALS, plan those renewals together.
Choosing a provider
Confirm the course is AHA-authorized and that you receive an official AHA card. Ask about class size, how skills testing works, and whether the card is issued the day of class. CPR Nashville has taught AHA classes since 2012, holds 652 Google reviews, and serves Nashville, Franklin, Smyrna, Spring Hill, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, Lebanon, Gallatin, Mt. Juliet and Forest Hills.
